The joint that connects the lower and upper jaw is called TMJ, which stands for the Temporo-mandibular Joint. This joint is complex and can cause a patient to experience pain or lock-jaw, preventing them from opening the mouth. Patients suffering from TMJ disorders often experience the following symptoms:
- Popping or clicking sound of the jaw
- Muscle spasm
- Locking of the jaw
- Ear pain
Why Patients Have TMJ Problems
There are a variety of reasons why patients deal with TMJ problems, including stress, infections, hormones, and genetics. Patients with poor posture and weak upper back muscles can deal with TMJ. Clenching or grinding of the teeth will cause pain and can cause the jaw to lock up.
Symptoms of TMJ
Pain of the jaw joint is the most common symptom of TMJ, but there are a variety of other symptoms including:
- Blurred vision
- Sore neck muscles
- Shoulder pain
- Pain in the temples
Once a patient has been diagnosed with TMJ, there are several TMJ treatment methods that can be used to treat it. Common treatments include Night Guards, Bite Guards, and adjustments to the teeth.
